Hybrid photonic chips that convert the colour of light

MPL news

Illustration of a ring resonator on a chip: a green pump laser enters, Raman scattering in the cladding and four-wave mixing in the core produce a rainbow of colours

In a silicon nitride ring resonator embedded in silica, the light uses both materials at once: Raman scattering in the silica cladding and four-wave mixing in the silicon nitride core together produce broad frequency combs spanning more than 400 nm. Arghadeep Pal, Alekhya Ghosh and colleagues report the results in Advanced Photonics.
